Am 13. Mai begrüßte die Hochschule Merseburg gemeinsam im Verbund der vier Hochschulen für angewandte Wissenschaften in Sachsen-Anhalt rund 50 Promotionsinteressierte aus dem In- und Ausland zu dem Online‑Event „Futures in Applied Research – Voices, Paths and Impacts in Saxony‑Anhalt“. Mit dieser Veranstaltung trug die Hochschule Merseburg zu den insgesamt 180 Events bei, die weltweit zum European-Doctoral Day veranstaltet wurden und stärkte damit die Etablierung des internationalen Aktionstags. Eine besondere Wertschätzung erfuhr die Veranstaltung durch das persönliche Interesse und die politische Unterstützung des Ministerpräsidenten Sven Schulze. In seiner Videobotschaft würdigt er den European Doctoral Day als deutliches Zeichen für den wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs in Europa, in Deutschland und speziell in Sachsen‑Anhalt. Er verweist auf die kontinuierlich steigende Zahl der Promotionen, wodurch sich Sachsen-Anhalt als zukunftsorientierter Wissenschaftsstandort weiter festigt. Darüber hinaus verwies er auf die hohe Lebens‑ und Arbeitsqualität sowie die zahlreichen Chancen, die der Standort für Forschende aller Karrierephasen biete.
Die Eröffnung erfolgte durch ein inspirierendes Grußwort von Prof. Dr. Doreén Pick, Prorektorin für Forschung, Wissenstransfer und Existenzgründung. Im weiteren Verlauf führte Moderatorin Elena Strempek souverän durch das Programm. In verschiedenen Formaten teilten internationale Doktorand*innen ihre persönlichen Erfahrungen und gaben Einblicke in Arbeitsalltag; Motivation und Hürden.
Im Interview sprach Christiane Wichmann mit den Promovierenden Carolin Rautenberg und Joseph Smithard (alle Hochschule Anhalt) über Betreuungsmodelle und individuelle Gestaltung des Arbeitsalltags. In den darauffolgenden Erfahrungsberichten sprach Sonam (Hochschule Merseburg) über Motivation, Hürden und den Verlauf ihrer Promotionszeit, während Zonghan Jiang (Hochschule Anhalt) verschiedene Finanzierungsoptionen während der Promotion schilderte. Parallel standen den Teilnehmenden individuelle Beratungsgespräche mit Josephine Winkler und Dr. Jens Brauer zur Verfügung, die eifrig genutzt wurden, um offene Fragen zum Promotionsweg zu klären.
Den krönenden Abschluss bildete die 3-Minute‑Pitch‑Challenge, in der die Promovierenden Dorottya Hajnal (Hochschule Anhalt), Amadou Manjang (Hochschule Merseburg), Anjali Wankhede (Hochschule Harz), Şan Yalçın Sarabil (Hochschule Anhalt) und Sharmin Akter (Hochschule Merseburg) ihre Forschung in jeweils drei-minütigen Flash-Talks präsentierten. Das Publikum kürte den Pitch „Biodiversity in Solar Parks“ als besten Beitrag – herzlichen Glückwunsch, Dorottya!
Die Rückmeldungen der Teilnehmenden spiegeln ein durchweg positives Stimmungsbild wider: Die Kombination aus informativen Vorträgen, praxisnahen Erfahrungsberichten und interaktiven Formaten wurde als abwechslungsreich, motivierend und besonders hilfreich empfunden; die Möglichkeit, direkt von echten Doktorand*innen zu lernen, schuf ein klares Bild von den Realitäten einer Promotion und weckte das Interesse, den eigenen Promotionsweg in Sachsen‑Anhalt zu erwägen.
Die Veranstaltung wurde durch das Verbundprojekt Internationale Graduiertenakademie (InterGrad-EGD) organisatorisch und inhaltlich unterstützt. Ein besonderer Dank geht deshalb an den Europäischen Sozialfonds Plus (ESF+) und das Land Sachsen-Anhalt, die dieses Vorhaben finanzieren.
Die Organisatorin, Maria Löffler dankt der Moderatorin, den Referent*innen, den Berater*innen, den Helfer*innen und den Teilnehmenden für das gelungene Event und sieht das positive Echo als Ansporn, den European Doctoral Day künftig weiter auszubauen und Promovierende so sichtbar zu machen und noch mehr Menschen für eine Promotion in Sachsen‑Anhalt zu begeistern.

European Doctoral Day 2026: Successful kickoff in Saxony-Anhalt
On May 13, Merseburg University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with the four universities of applied sciences in Saxony-Anhalt, welcomed around 50 prospective doctoral students from Germany and abroad to the online event “Futures in Applied Research – Voices, Paths, and Impacts in Saxony-Anhalt.” With this event, Merseburg University of Applied Sciences contributed to the total of 180 events held worldwide for European Doctoral Day, thereby strengthening the establishment of this international day of action. The event received special recognition through the personal interest and political support of Minister President Sven Schulze. In his video message, he praised the European Doctoral Day as a clear sign of support for the early career researchers in Europe, in Germany, and specifically in Saxony-Anhalt. He noted the steadily rising number of doctoral degrees, which further solidifies Saxony-Anhalt’s position as a forward-looking hub for research. He also highlighted the high quality of life and work, as well as the numerous opportunities the region offers researchers at all stages of their careers.
The event opened with inspiring word of welcome by Prof. Dr. Doreén Pick, Vice Rector for Research, Knowledge Transfer, and Entrepreneurship. Moderator Elena Strempek then confidently guided the audience through the program. In various formats, international doctoral students shared their personal experiences and provided insights into their daily work, motivation, and challenges.
In an interview Christiane Wichmann discussed supervision models and the individual structuring of daily work with the doctoral students Carolin Rautenberg and Joseph Smithard (all from Anhalt University of Applied Sciences). In the subsequent experience reports, Sonam (Merseburg University of Applied Sciences) spoke about motivation, challenges and the course of her doctoral studies, while Zonghan Jiang (Anhalt University of Applied Sciences) described various funding options during the doctorate. Throughout the event, participants had the opportunity to engage in one-on-one consultations with Josephine Winkler and Dr. Jens Brauer, which were eagerly utilized to clarify open questions regarding the doctoral track.
The event culminated in the 3-Minute Pitch Challenge, in which the doctoral candidates Dorottya Hajnal (Anhalt University of Applied Sciences), Amadou Manjang (Merseburg University of Applied Sciences), Anjali Wankhede (Harz University of Applied Sciences), Şan Yalçın Sarabil (Anhalt University of Applied Sciences) and Sharmin Akter (Merseburg University of Applied Sciences) presented their research in three-minute flash talks. The audience selected the pitch “Biodiversity in Solar Parks” as the winner —congratulations, Dorottya!
Feedback from participants reflected an overwhelmingly positive atmosphere: The combination of informative lectures, practical case studies, and interactive formats was perceived as varied, motivating, and particularly helpful; the opportunity to learn directly from actual doctoral students provided a clear picture of the realities of pursuing a doctorate and sparked interest in considering a doctoral path in Saxony-Anhalt.
The event received organizational and content support from the International Graduate Academy (InterGrad-EGD) collaborative project. Special thanks therefore go to the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) and the State of Saxony-Anhalt, which are funding this initiative.
